Emel Mahlouthi

Emel Mathlouthi, known professionally as EMEL, is a Tunisian singer, songwriter, and activist renowned for her fusion of ethereal, hip-hop, and indie-pop sounds with politically charged lyrics. She gained international recognition during the Arab Spring when her song Kelmti Horra ("My Word Is Free") became a revolutionary anthem.

Born in Tunisia, EMEL developed a passion for music early on, drawing inspiration from classical, folk, rock, and electronica. She moved to Paris in 2008 to pursue her artistic vision freely. Over the years, she has collaborated with notable artists, including Iranian filmmaker Shirin Neshat and multimedia artist Laurie Anderson. Her music, often centered on themes of freedom, resistance, and empowerment, has taken her to global stages, including the Nobel Peace Prize Concert.
